Artist
Schelte Adamsz. à Bolswert (1586-1659)
Title
The Triumph of the Church Through the Eucharist
Medium
Engraving [Schneevoogt 66-20; Wijngaert 52] in two plates published in Antwerp by Nicolaes Lauwers (1600-1652). After a tapestry woven at the Brussels ateliers of Jan Raes I (1574–1651) and Jacob Geubels II (1599 - ca. 1633), commissioned for the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid, Spain, and based on designs executed by Rubens and his studio between 1625 and 1627 (see the grisaille bozzetto in the Fitzwilliam Museum and the oil-on-panel modello in the Museo del Prado).
Rome 1977, cat. 55
Note
There are at least four other engravings after the same composition (see Schneevoogt, page 67 numbers 21-24), including one by François Ragot and one by Cornelis Galle. They are all inverted according to Schneevoogt, but the Ragot engraving has been displayed in the same direction as the Bolswert (see Rome 1977, cat. 370). We have not seen the others.
