The Last Judgement with the Coat of Arms of Charles III of Spain

The Last Judgement with the Coat of Arms of Charles III of Spain

3697A
Artist
Ambrogio Orio (1737-1825)
Title
The Last Judgement with the Coat of Arms of Charles III of Spain
Date
1765-1767
Medium
Engraving. After Philippe Thomassin (1562-1622). Published between 1765 and 1767 at the Remondini Workshop (1657-1860) in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. The idea of substituting the Coat of Arms of Cardinal Pompeo Arigoni in Thomassin's print for that of Spanish king Charles III seems to have come from Louis Bonnardel, French printseller to the Spanish colonies headquartered at Cadiz.

Note
The attribution to Orio comes from Ragon 2005, 644; his biographical dates come from the BnF and the FAMSF; the dates of publication of his print can be inferred from Moro 1994, 490. The Spanish Crown initiated a cause célèbre against the Remondini Workshop (1657-1860) and its commercial network on account of this print, as the placement of the coat of arms of the Spanish monarch close to the scythe of Death and the Gates of Hell was considered offensive. See Rodríguez Romero & Siracusano 2010.
