Engraving with etched highlights. Plate 24 of Sylvae Sacrat. After an engraving [TIB 7001.391] by Johan Sadeler I (ca. 1550-1600), itself  after a lost drawing by Maarten de Vos (1532-1603). Published in Paris, rue St. Jacques, a la Ville de Cologne, first by Jacques Honervogt I (ca. 1583 – ca. 1666) ca. 1635. Then published, at the same address but possibly as part of other collections of anchorites, first by Gérard Jollain I (d. 1683) ca. 1654 and then by François Jollain (1641-1704) in 1688.

Note
There are close versions of this subject, on the same direction, published by the workshops of Jean Leclerc IV and Thomas de Leu. But only the version by de Leu, not the one by Leclerc, shows the full cavity on the tree trunk.
