Saints Euthymius and Theoctistus

1033A
Artist
Workshop of Jacques Honervogt I (ca. 1583 – ca. 1666)
Title
Saints Euthymius and Theoctistus
Date
1634
Medium
Engraving with etched highlights. Plate 6 of the Trophaeum Vitae Solitariae. After an engraving [TIB 7101.117] by Raphael Sadeler I (1560-1632), itself  after a lost drawing by Maarten de Vos (1532-1603). Published in Paris, rue St. Jacques, a la Ville de Cologne, first by Jacques Honervogt I (ca. 1583 – ca. 1666) in 1634. Then published, at the same address but possibly as part of other collections of anchorites, first by Gérard Jollain I (d. 1683) ca. 1654 and then by François Jollain (1641-1704) in 1688.

Note
It seems that de Leu did not publish a version of this image in his sets of anchorites. But there is a close version of this subject —and in the same direction— published by Jean Leclerc IV. We still prefer the Honervogt version as the Leclerc could not have served as a model for the painting of Fulgentius in this series (it lacks the bell that can be found in the other versions).
